The legacy of Te Putu
Crisis moments have been faced by our community before and decisions have been made to futureproof the wellbeing of whaanau and to ensure sustainable supply.
Te Putu is known to have saved the many families who relied on tuna in a time of need, by ensuring the resource of kai was protected for fair distribution for all, and for future generations by declaring a raahui and then the sharing of kai available.
Raahui Pookeka identity is in who we are as a people of the Kiingitanga.

HIINAU
POUATIA TE RAAHUI: COMMUNITY SAFETY
Hiinau is a strong, dense hardwood often used for making durable tools and structures. It represents strength, longevity, and the capacity to bear the weight of responsibility. Hiinau embodies the role of those who provide safety and security, ensuring the foundation of the community is solid.
It reflects the importance of enduring stability and protection, which keeps the community standing strong in the face of challenges.
Just as hinau represents stability, protection, and the weight of responsibility, Ira Koopuu's initiatives focus on creating safe, resilient, and enduring foundations for communities. We also acknowledge that a well-connected community is a safe community.
Ira koopuu works actively towards a well connected community enabling safety, vibrancy and thriving whaanau within Raahui Pookeka.
We recognise that Raahui Pookeka is built with movers and shakers, square pegs in round holes, mavericks and radicals. We look to harness this diversity to facilitate safety and security in our community!
