PATATEE

Maamaa & Peepi

Patatee is nurturing and protective, often growing alongside stronger trees. It thrives in sheltered environments and is associated with shelter and care.

Just like maamaa and peepi, they are central to the cycle of life, embodying care, protection, and new beginnings. Like patatee, mums and bubs thrive when supported by the community around them, reinforcing the idea of whaanau as the heart of a thriving home.

"Ka whakamiri noa i toona aratau,
e tia nei he tupu pua hou"

Softly nurturing our form so that a new flourishing growth may emerge

Ira Koopuu is dedicated to empowering hapuu maamaa and their whaanau through waananga that nurture the journey of motherhood and celebrate the vital role of maamaa as leaders within their whaanau. Grounded in tikanga Maaori and Maatauranga, our kaupapa creates safe, supportive spaces where maamaa can strengthen their confidence and knowledge.

Patatee is central to our mahi - a symbol of nurturing, resilience, and growth. Through our waananga, we and acknowledge the state in Kiingi Taawhiao’s maimai aroha.

“Ka whakamiri noa i toona aratau, e tia nei he tupu pua hou” - This speaking metaphorically about nurturing or caring for something (a maamaa)

in a gentle, intentional way, leading to renewal, growth, or flourishing. It’s a poetic expression of gently guiding and supporting maamaa so they can blossom into leaders who shepherd their whaanau with aroha and strength.

Our waananga combine practical tools, traditional knowledge, and whanaungatanga, helping maamaa to grow in their role while ensuring the well-being of their tamariki and wider whaanau. With the collective strength of the Raahui Pookeka eco-system Ira Koopuu are confident to champion and honour the mana of hapuu maamaa and help them to cultivate thriving, connected whaanau.
